Privacy notice
This notice explains how FlowCanary (“we”, “us”) uses personal data when you visit this website, use the free checker or join the waitlist. We follow the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.
Who we are
FlowCanary is an early-stage product run from the United Kingdom by Paul Devlin, who is the data controller. You can contact us about privacy by replying to any email we send you.
What we collect and why
- Waitlist: your email address, the plan you're interested in and whether you ticked the optional product-updates box. We use it to tell you about your waitlist place and the launch (lawful basis: your request to join, and our legitimate interest in running the waitlist) and, only if you ticked the box, to send occasional product updates (lawful basis: consent).
- Free checker: the URL and optional step you enter. We use them only to run the check and show you the result. We don't keep the results or screenshots after sending them to your browser.
- Abuse prevention: to enforce the 3-checks-per-day limit we store a one-way, salted hash of your IP address combined with the date. We don't store your raw IP address, and these records are deleted automatically after about two days (lawful basis: legitimate interests in keeping the free tool available).
- Pre-orders (when available): payments are handled by Stripe. We receive your email, the plan and payment status. We never see or store your card details.
- Server logs: our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs (such as request times and errors) to keep the service secure and working.
Cookies
This site does not set advertising or analytics cookies. If that changes, we'll ask for your consent first.
Who we share data with
We use these service providers (processors), who handle data on our instructions:
- Vercel Inc.: website hosting and storage (functions run in London; Vercel is a US company).
- ActiveCampaign, LLC: waitlist and email (US).
- Stripe Payments Europe / Stripe, Inc.: payments, when pre-orders open.
Where data is transferred outside the UK, it's protected by UK-approved safeguards such as the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the International Data Transfer Addendum. We never sell your data.
How long we keep it
Waitlist data is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, or for at most 24 months if FlowCanary doesn't launch. Pre-order and payment records are kept for 6 years for tax and accounting purposes.
Your rights
You can ask to access, correct or delete your data, object to or restrict how we use it, ask for a copy in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time (every email has an unsubscribe link). If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, though we'd appreciate the chance to sort it out first.
Changes
We'll update this page if anything changes and change the date at the top.
